3D Puff Transfers, Explained

Everything you need to apply, care for, and design around your puff transfers, from heat settings to artwork setup.

Designing Your Artwork

A few quick rules so your puff print pops the way it should.

Single-color artwork example for 3D puff transfers

Keep colors simple

Single-color designs give the cleanest, most consistent puff. Skip intricate multi-color artwork.

Bold text width example for 3D puff transfers

Go bold, not thin

Thick, chunky letterforms hold the dimensional puff effect best. Fine scripts and small text tend to flatten out.

Line thickness and negative space example for 3D puff transfers

Give it room to breathe

Aim for at least 2pt line thickness and 4pt of negative space between elements (1pt = 1/72 inch).

How to Apply

Six steps to a perfect silicone heat transfer.

Weeding

1. Weeding

Use a weeding tool to remove the excess vinyl from outside your design.

Place

Position the design carrier-side up on your garment. Use heat-tape for hats or tricky placements.

Press

3. Press

Apply medium, even pressure at 150°C for 8 seconds.

Cooling Down

4. Cooling Down

Lift the press and let the transfer cool completely before you touch the film.

Peel

5. Peel

Once fully cool, slowly remove the PET carrier film. COLD PEEL.

Done

Wait at least 24 hours before the first wash so the transfer cures fully.

Easy to cut and weed: 120µ (± 10µm) silicone on an adhesive PET carrier, compatible with most vinyl cutters and heat presses.
Pressing Instructions
Cut and weed: Choose cut settings based on the 120µ vinyl thickness and your blade condition, then weed the excess material from outside the design.
Position face down: Line up the transfer carefully on your item. Heat-resistant tape isn't usually needed on a flat press, but it helps a lot for hats or ironing.
Press: Medium pressure at 150°C for 8 seconds.
Peel: COLD PEEL. Wait until completely cool before removing the PET carrier film.
Cure: Allow at least 24 hours before the first wash to ensure full curing.
Care Instructions
Wait at least 24 hours after pressing before the first wash.
Turn the garment inside out before washing.
Home wash at up to 60°C using a standard household detergent.
Tumble dry on low.
Do not bleach, and iron inside out only.
Store away from direct sunlight, heat, and humidity.
Art Upload Tips
Vector-based artwork is strongly preferred. Build your design in software like Illustrator or CorelDRAW so every path cuts cleanly. Raster art should be at least 300 DPI.
Single colour per cut: Cut vinyl is a solid colour, so gradients, photos, and shading won't reproduce. Separate multi-colour designs into layers.
Keep lines bold: Very fine lines and small text are difficult to weed and may lift. Thicker strokes and generous spacing weed and press best.
Tip: exporting from Canva or Procreate as a PDF works great.
